MATHEMATICS COURSES

The Mathematics Placement Exams helps Conley Academy determine your starting enrollment level for English Mathematics coursework. After you are finished with the exam(s), your Conley Academy will schedule you for Math courses based on your scores.

6-8th Grade Common Core Mathematics Standards

If you thought that positive whole numbers are all that math class has to offer, think again. We're here to tell you that the no-fuss numbers you've multiplied, divided, added, and fawned over so far are only the tip of the iceberg. Or at least only half of the iceberg.

Decimals are another way to represent numbers. In fact, we probably see decimals more often on a daily basis than any other type of number. Every time you buy something, or even just look at a price tag, you're looking at decimals. Whenever you turn on the radio, the FM stations are all given as decimals. Ever look up directions on Google Maps? The distance from point A to point B is usually given in decimal form.

Level 6: Unit 3 - Division

Sure, you could just count things out one at a time to everyone, but what if you are dividing up a huge bag of M&M's, or the big stash of pennies you found in your sister's room? It could take you a long time, and if you are divvying up pennies from your sister's room, speed may be important.

Level 6: Unit 4 - Number Theory

If you think the Wicked Witch has it bad, then the numbers we're about to factor have it worse. Maybe you think that numbers are sort of wicked anyway, and so they deserve it. Either way, the forecast looks like rain—er, factoring—and so larger numbers are about to break down into simpler pieces. Maybe now they won't look quite so evil?

Level 6: Unit 5 - Addition and Subtraction of Fractions and Mixed Numbers

Fractions can be tricky little things. It's not just that they're a bit weirder than plain old whole numbers; they can also take all sorts of different forms, depending on the situation. What's more, sometimes these fluid fractions have to be combined with other ones, through addition and subtraction. It's hard enough dealing with one shapeshifting vampire; try setting two of them up on a business meeting.

Level 6: Unit 8 - Coordinate Graphs

This unit is for all the visual learners out there; your time has arrived. We can't provide a complete break from the lovely world of fractions, decimals, and percents, but we promise that the focus here will be on big ideas rather than tons of calculations. That's a silver lining, right?

We've known numbers forever. We learn to count when we're about two and we never stop. It's kind of like they're our school friend we grew up with, sharing graham crackers and juice boxes. But this unit is kind of like what happens when that friend goes to camp over the summer and comes back sort of different, with a whole new vocabulary. We know they're the same, basically, but they don't really look like it.

Level 7: Unit 3 - Solving Equations and Inequalities in One Variable

Level 7: Unit 7 - 2D Geometry

In this unit, you'll learn how to see the world around you in a totally different way. (No, not upside down. Now get off of there.) Geometry will help you describe shapes, calculate side lengths, find congruent angles, and manipulate formulas for our own personal gain. And let's be real: who doesn't love using just about anything for their own personal gain?

Level 8: Unit 1 - Rational and Irrational Numbers

Spoiler alert: rational numbers are fractions. There's a little more to them, but that's rational numbers in a nutshell. Irrational numbers aren't fractions, and never will be. Examples are π and √2.

See? They're not so big and tough. Hopefully you don't feel like you're levitating out of your desk anymore and the world seems less…irrational.

We're also going to get a teeny tiny taste of working with algebra. Watch and learn—you'll get it after some practice. Keep in mind that knowing this stuff will totally come in handy once we get to the big boy: algebra.

Level 8: Unit 8 - Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities

In this unit, we're going to work with two of the most common algebraic tools that humans use to plan and strategize: systems of linear equations and systems of linear inequalities. Don't let the no-nonsense names put you off. It'll be more fun than dressing up a bunch of dancers as chess pieces and making them fight with scimitars.
